Hike 61: Punta Hidalgo/Bejia/Barranco Rio
The hike leads from Punta del Hidalgo via the Canal Barranco Seco to Bejia. This leads at a lofty height through the steep rock face above the Barranco Seco. The walk in and next to the intact canal is very varied. The last tunnel is 100 metres long. The other tunnels are much shorter. You should not be put off by signs saying that you are not allowed to enter the canal. The canal is intact.
After leaving the canal, the route goes up to Bejia, a small idyllic village, and immediately down again to Batan de Abajo. Here you can take a rest and gather strength for the descent. The descent from Batan is moderate at first and then quite steep down into the Barranco del Rio. There you could theoretically hike back to Punta del Hidalgo in a canal. But right at the beginning a rock overhang blocks the way and next to it it goes steeply downhill. So we took the parallel path in the barranco. It is very difficult because of the rocks and stones and leads us back to Punta del Hidalgo after 3 km.
The tour is very varied. The highlight is the Canal Barranco Seco. The Barranco del Rio is already demanding and also has water in some places. After rainfall, it is not possible to pass through the Barranco. The last section leads from Los Batanes via Bejia down to Punta del Hidalgo. The hamlet of Bejia with its tranquil high valley is one of the most idyllic places in Tenerife.
A detailed description of the route and the GPS track can be found in the Hiking Guide Tenerife.
