Flipper Uno

Whale Watching with Flipper Uno

At some point it was time for a whale watching tour. So we spontaneously drove to Los Gigantes, parked near the harbour and looked around for boats. Even near the harbour, you are approached by many tour operators. Since we prefer a sailing ship without a party, we had decided in advance on the MS Katrin. But they have a day off on Saturday and so we went on the Flipper Uno.

We got 2 seats directly at the ship for 28 € each. This included all drinks and a hot meal. The departure from the harbour was accompanied by loud music. Afterwards, there was discreet sprinkling with partly Spanish music. At the dolphin sites, the music was off for quite some time.

There was also a photographer/filmmaker on board who took a photo of each family at the beginning. After the excursion, you could buy this photo for 7 €. You could also order a video of the excursion, which would then be finished in the next few days. We did without both. The photographer was not pushy and immediately accepted a 'no thank you'.

First we went out into the Atlantic Ocean near the coast. At the first place where dolphins cavort, there was absolutely nothing going on. Then the ship sailed on to another spot and there the first dolphins were to be seen. Actually, swimming in front of Playa de Masca was on the agenda. The crew asked the passengers whether they should stay with the dolphins or whether swimming was more important. The passengers decided in favour of the dolphins. And so we were able to see several groups of bottlenose dolphins. But they only jumped out of the water when we left again. We didn't see any whales. You need a lot of luck.

In between there were plenty of drinks (including alcoholic ones) and a paella with chicken. The supply was very good in quantity and quality. The crew made the trip a unique experience for all participants. It is important to have a warm jacket with you, as there is sometimes a strong wind at sea. The ship often rocked violently on the waves. If you are sensitive to this, it is better to book a provider with a 1.5 or 2 hour journey time.
