Hike 77: Pico Sur - Pico Viejo

The hike starts at the Mirador de Narices del Teide and leads us over the western flank of Pico Viejo first to Pico Sur. The last section directly in front of the crater of Pico Viejo is very demanding. There is no discernible path on the steep slope. Alpine experience, good orientation and fitness are the basic requirements for this tour. For normally trained hikers, I recommend the somewhat easier version on Pico Viejo (Tour 58).

We park at the Mirador de Narices del Teide - also called Mirador de Chio in some maps - and start the ascent on Sendero 9. Then we walk along the ascent path towards El Calderon. The path is still easily passable. As time goes by, I lose my bearings and have to correct myself more often on the steep slope. The last section before the plateau of Pico Sur is very exciting. On a rocky steep slope, I walked up the slope partly on all fours. A path is not recognisable. You walk directly up the crater edge to the plateau. You should be free from giddiness at this point. Here you can enjoy the views into the crater and to Pico Viejo and Teide.

You cross the plateau and descend a slope to Sendero 9. It leads us directly to the summit of Pico Viejo. The path is really easy. The views from there into the crater of Pico Viejo are outstanding. It is rare to be so close to the summit of the Teide. In total, you walk 1.7 km from the plateau of Pico Sur to the summit of Pico Viejo and back again.

The descent is then via Sendero 9 to the Narices del Teide, which we pass. Behind the Narices (Teide noses), you can keep to the right and walk back along Sendero 9 in a relaxed manner. But you can also take a shortcut. To do this, you have to leave the Sendero 9 nd descend a side path. Near the black lava field, the path is not always clearly recognisable. Now it is important to pay close attention to the GPS in order to find the only crossing of the lava field. The GPS app should be zoomed in a lot for this (at least 50m, better 20 m). The crossing is only about 50 metres long. Then you will find yourself on a scree field. Orientation is a little easier here and you can also correct your path sometimes. From the crossing of the black lava field, it is only 1.4 km to the mirador.

A detailed description of the route and the GPS track can be found in the Hiking Guide Tenerife.
