Hike 41: Sombrero de Chasna
This hike took us up the caldera rim to the Sombrero de Chasna, although we did not climb the sombrero itself. The tour is quite difficult even without a climb. In addition, there was the onset of winter in February 2016. We parked at the Parador Nacional and headed towards the Guajara alternative ascent.
We cross the main trail of the Siete Canadas and take the moderately difficult slope to the caldera rim. 15 cm high but frozen snow provides some grip. Our advantage is that someone is walking down the mountain here. So we can take the ascent in his footprints. The high trail, on the other hand, is quite easy to walk, but stretches all the way to the Sombrero. So far, the tour is moderately difficult.
At the Sombrero we don't find the descent. For the way back there would be just enough time until nightfall. After half an hour we finally found the entrance thanks to GPS. A steep descent in the snow on scree awaits us. Again we find footprints. Thanks to them we are able to descend the slope at all. From time to time, cairns mark the way. The snow gives way only slightly and offers more grip than the scree. Without snow, this slope would be impassable for us. This path is very difficult and extremely slippery in dry conditions. We also slide more in the lower part of the slope because there is no snow there. In addition, the orientation on the scree field is very confusing.
Once at the bottom, the route then leads back to the Parador in the Canadas via the Roques de Garcia. Hiking this tour again is only recommended for those who know how to take the adventure and challenge of the steep slope.
A detailed description of the route and the GPS track can be found in the Hiking Guide Tenerife.
