Hike 73: Pasada del Fraile
From time to time, the access road to Teide from the north is closed. If you are lucky, you can still get to El Portillo. On this day, however, the closure due to ice was 8 km before El Portillo at the Casa del Caminero. Because of the vague statements on site about when the closure would be lifted, I spontaneously hiked a short loop in this area. My advantage was the offline map of the OsmAnd app.
There is a small car park for hikers and also parking spaces directly on the side of the road. We set off on the Pista de Ramon Caminero. In this area at an altitude of 1700 metres, there are often trade wind clouds already in the morning. This gives the hike through the sparse pine forest a special look. After 3 km we leave the Pista at the Cuevitas de Limon to the left. The path is narrower but easy to follow and 1 km further on we reach the Pasada del Fraile.
Here you can descend 200 metres to the right to Salto el Arco, a waterfall. Due to the dryness, I was sure that the waterfall had no water, so I took the way back to the left on the Pista Arco de Chimoche. The way back to the TF-21 is just as tranquil, along which I walk parallel the last 500 metres back to the starting point. The trails are very easy and you can extend or shorten the tour spontaneously. Born out of necessity, it was a beautiful hike in Canary Island pine forest.
A detailed description of the route and the GPS track can be found in the Hiking Guide Tenerife.
